Stakeholder Engagement - Towards a
sustainable waste management strategy for London
London Waste Action aims to increase co-ordination
between the producers of goods, retailers, manufacturers,
the public and the statutory local authorities and all concerned
with the management of waste and reusable materials and
equipment, with the aim of achieving a more sustainable
approach to its waste management.
As part of our aim of achieving coordination
amongst our core stakeholders we have recently completed
a two part stakeholder engagement process, which was designed
to support the development of the Mayor's Municipal Waste
Management strategy for London. The complete stakeholder
engagement process ran from December 1999 to March 2002
and was supported through funding provided by the RMC environment
fund. The process was run by the Environment Council. The
second web based process was supported by Dialogue by Design.
Two reports have been produced and both are available for
downloading.
The first stakeholder dialogue report
The Mayor of London has a statutory responsibility
to publish a municipal waste management strategy for London.
The public consultation draft was published in September
2002. Details are available from www.london.gov.uk.
Prior to the draft strategy being developed, London Waste
Action brought together stakeholders from a wide range of
interests to discuss the main planks of a waste strategy
for London. The dialogue process has been a great success.
A Stakeholders report was published in August 2000 and was
received by the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone [photo].

The second stakeholder dialogue report
Following this process the Mayor published
a draft waste strategy for consideration by the London Assembly.
London Waste Action took the opportunity to broaden the
discussion at this period by running a further stakeholder
dialogue, through a web based process, which enabled a wider
range of stakeholders to comment on the assembly draft.
A report has been published and is also available for downloading.
Also available for downloading is
a stakeholder baseline document that was produced at the
start of the first stakeholder dialogue. This is also available
for downloading in PDF format below
