A principal aim of London Waste Action during its life was to increase co-ordination between producers of goods, retailers, manufacturers, the public, statutory local authorities and all concerned with the management of waste, reusable materials and equipment, with the aim of achieving a more sustainable approach to waste management. This can be achieved through reducing the amounts of waste we produce, at home and at work. Where waste is unavoidable a sustainable approach is to encourage the refurbishment for reuse or reprocessing, so that the materials in the product can be made into new materials (recycled). Where neither of these approaches is economically possible, waste is processed to recover other intrinsic value such as energy.
London Waste Action operated as a working partnership between the public, private and independent sectors. The company was established as an Environmental Body under the Government’s Landfill Tax Regulations (No 814198); a Company limited by guarantee (Registration No 3378046); and a registered charity (No 1067460). Membership of the company was shared by London First and London Councils Ltd, formerly known as the Association of London Government.
Organisational Structure
A maximum of 9 trustees were permitted and made up the Board of Trustees. Three were elected by the Business Members, three by the General Members and three nominated by the London Councils Limited. London First was the sole Business Member. As there were no General Members, trustees under this category were appointed by agreement between London First and the London Councils Limited. Two trustees are the minimum permitted of which at least one shall have been elected by the Business Members and one nominated by the London Councils Limited. The charity was governed by the board of trustees which met as frequently as necessary to deal with the affairs of the charity.
