London Waste Action was established in May 1997 and became a registered charity in January 1998. The charitable objectives of the company were to promote for the public benefit waste management practices which promote the conservation, protection, improvement and sustainability of the physical and natural environment in and around London. The operations of the company ceased in January 2009 and the company is in the process of being wound up.
Charitable Activities
The principal activity of the charity was associated with the management of projects for the London Recycling Fund which operated over the period 2002-2006. In addition, the charity was involved to a much lesser extent with a small number of other projects, some of which were funded by the landfill tax credit scheme. Details of the various projects and the reports published can be found below and on other pages on this website. Because these projects were funded with public funds they are being made available for an extended period after the company is wound up and can be downloaded from this website. Copies of the London Recycling Fund 2002-2006 Final Report can also be accessed through the British Library, London and the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
The London Recycling Fund 2002-2006
The aim of the Fund was to enable a reduction in the amount of household waste generated in London and to ensure that a higher proportion of what remains is recycled or otherwise diverted from landfill. Core funding of £46.95 million over the four years 2002 to 2006 was allocated by DEFRA from the Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund for England. Additional funding of £2.588 million was provided by the Waste and Resource Action Programme (WRAP) and £2.0 million by the London Development Agency (LDA).
In the four years to March 2006 134 grants were made to support a range of recycling and waste minimisation projects. The Fund adopted a strategy of encouraging additional investment by applicants and their partners. This led to significant additional investment by waste authorities and the private sector - resulting in the £49.88 million grant funding supporting projects worth a total of over £190 million, through leverage of additional private and public sector funds of £143 million.
